About Redcap Remembrance 2011

Redcap Remembrance 2011 is a cycling pilgrimage through the United Kingdom visiting the graves and special places of remembrance of the 22 members of the Royal Military Police who have died on operations since 31 August 1979.

My name is Dudley Giles. In March 2012 I will retire from the British Army after nearly 33 years commissioned service with the Royal Military Police (RMP). During this time I have personally served on operations in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Croatia and Afghanistan and, as a commander, I have also deployed my soldiers to East Timor, Kosovo, Sierra Leone and Iraq. I was fortunate. I emerged unscathed. But 22 of my colleagues have not been so fortunate. They lost their lives on active service in Northern Ireland, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. Some were personal friends; all were members of a very special regimental family.

In September 2011 I will undertake a pilgrimage around the UK in order to pay my respects to their memory. I will literally be getting on my bike to visit their graves or, in the case of those who were cremated, the places of especial commemoration. In doing so, I hope to give substance to the refrain “We Will Remember Them” and also endeavour to raise  funds for the RMP Benevolent Fund which exists to provide practical support to the families that are left behind.

My journey will take me from the Midlands of England to Edinburgh and Ayr in Scotland, across the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland, back to the north-west of England (via the Isle of Man), down the spine of Wales, and across the south of England from Bristol to Deal before finally finishing up in East Anglia in the garrison town of Colchester. Although this is an individual effort and solely self-supported, I will be joined at various stages of the route by serving and retired members of RMP; particularly when I lay wreaths of remembrance or visit the homes of the bereaved. There are even some brave souls who have said that they are willing to cycle a part of the route with me.

The pilgrimage will start in Brackley, Northamptonshire, on 20 September 2011 and finish in Colchester on 22 October 2011.

        Kevin,

How lovely to hear from you. I tried to phone you but the number I had been given was clearly wrong. I’m sendingyou an email.

I would like to know when you will be in Northern Ireland. If possible I am minded to take a couple of days off work and join you for at least some of your pilgrimage this side of the water. Mark van Cuylenburg, former Sgt. RMP
